Cozumel Cruise Port and Terminal Information

cozumel beaches near cruise port

The good news is that there are lots of taxis available as soon as cruisers exit any of the terminals. Taxi fares are listed and reasonably priced in particular if you are in a group of 4 or more. Cruise passengers planning a day at the beach when calling at the Port of Cozumel have many different options. Besides famous beaches with free entrance such as San Francisco, Playa Bonita, Punta Morena or San Martin, there are many Beach Clubs, Hotels, Resorts and Parks in Cozumel.

Since your cruise ship is stopping in Cozumel for only one day, you better make the most your time! Here are my picks for some of the  best things to do in Cozumel and what makes this tiny island so unique. As we said at the start, 4 million cruise passengers visit Cozumel each year. You should be aware of the exchange rate to know if you’re getting a good deal (currently about 17 pesos to one dollar), but your dollars will be taken just about everywhere. Take a Photo of the Taxi RatesAt the taxi stand outside the ports, there are large signs with posted rates.

Is it safe to swim in Cozumel?

Like most beaches on this coast of Cozumel, snorkeling reveals a treasure trove of fish, turtles, and lobster. You can also find a guide who will take you farther out to the reef, where there is a lot more to discover below the water's surface. It's about a five-minute crossing from Cozumel to Passion Island. A smattering of restaurants are available for snacks and refreshments along the shore, as well. A small shop sells handicrafts, but they aren't much different from the tourist items you'll find closer to the cruise port. If you're visiting from Playa del Carmen, you can easily find tours that offer this perfect beach.

Can you walk to a beach from Cozumel’s ports?

Playa San Martin is the furthest of all of our recommended beaches near Cozumel cruise port. Like Playa Chen Rio, it’s situated on the opposite side of the island as your cruise port. To get there, your taxi will go straight across the island and a bit south. Visitors love how exclusive this beach is compared to those on the port side.

The Explorean Cozumel

Sometimes, all you need is a strong cup of coffee and a menu that serves breakfast till noon. That's what you'll get at Aqui + Ahora, a coffee shop with a prime location across from the ferry terminal. I love this spot for its sleek decor, sea views, and long list of great juices. This quirky furniture store is packed with some beautifully handcrafted wooden pieces.

If you want to get the all-inclusive package for your entire family, you purchase it in a bundle. Be sure to leave some time to taste the local flavors from some of the best restaurants in the area, sip a cold margarita while you relax on some of the Caribbean’s best beaches. There’s also a sandy walking path down to the rocky, limestone beach. Playa Chen Rio beach is a great escape and one of the only really nice soft, sandy beaches on this side of the island. If you’re looking for a quieter place to relax and enjoy a good book without interruption, try visiting one of these options on the “other” side of the island.

That one ticket will get you a lounge chair by the beach or pool and access to all the facilities. However, if you want to get food or drink, it’s requested that you spend at least $10. You’ll see colorful tiny tropical fish swimming right up to the shoreline. But go snorkeling at the reefs, and you’ll be astounded at the variety of underwater activities and beauty. If you’re looking for a more private experience, Cabana Beach might be the best place for you.

The beaches are immaculately kept powder white sands and the swimming is excellent here. Located a quick swim or stroll up the coast is the neighboring cozumel beach club resort, Mr Sanchos. It’s very similar to Nachi Cocom in that both occupy the best beaches in Cozumel near cruise port. The main difference is that Mr Sanchos is a bit “livelier.” You’ll find that cruise passengers here like to take advantage of the all-inclusive piece a bit more so than at Nachi Cocom. You won’t find the reefs and colorful fish that you’ll get in other Cozumel beaches near cruise port. The abundance of swimming and water-sports activity makes for a poor snorkeling experience.

One of the least divulged Resorts in Cozumel, Sunscape Sabor is a delight for those looking forward to the underwater wonders of Palancar Reef right in front of the beach. It is a great resort for adults to relax in a very low-key ambiance. If cruising with kids, it should be noted that Sabor is a family-friendly resort.

In that post, we’ll also give you a tip to save 50% on your cab cost. You’ll have access to bathroom amenities and changing rooms free to use for guests. However, if you’re hoping to see fish, coral, and deeper underwater environments, we’d choose a different beach option than Playa Chen Rio. As it’s on the eastern side of the island, the waves and currents cause for unsafe swimming and murky snorkeling conditions.

This beach is located farther south from the larger beach clubs on Cozumel's west coast, Palancar beach has free access, but there is a cost for tables, chairs, and loungers. The club offers visitors access to a long, sandy shore and the luxury of unlimited food and beverages. Sunset Beach is one of your closest beach options regardless of the Cozumel cruise terminal your ship is docked. It’s also one of the most popular for those looking to snorkel while in port. The Sunset Beach Restaurant is located adjacent to the shore and provides amenities for visitors. While there’s technically not an entrance fee, it’s common that cruise passengers will dine or have a drink here.

All three terminals of the Cozumel cruise port have bathrooms available. Taxi service is available 24/7 at the Cancun International Airport, but this must be booked in advance online. If you’re up for a more active day, partake in your choice of deep sea fishing, snorkeling, snuba and kayaking trips. Adding transportation to that list of benefits will cost you another $15.

While some small beaches exist in this area, the larger and nicer ones are on the southwest side of the island and on the eastern shore. Mr. Sanchos stands out as a favorite beach spot among visitors to Cozumel. This beach club has a rock-free, sandy shore and the convenience of unlimited food and drinks.

Expect the soft, white sand that you’d picture when thinking of a tropical island. Playa Mia resort is a great option and another of our recommendations for best beaches by Cozumel cruise port. It's the most expensive of all of our recommended options, at roughly $30 (starting price). Although, that it includes everything you'll need in a beach day. And for that price, it's still significantly less than many excursion options.

SkyReef Beach Club, located on the southwestern shore, provides a more intimate beach experience. This beach is surrounded by lush nature and offers additional amenities such as snorkeling, dolphin encounters, and an underwater sculpture garden. This family-friendly oasis is a hive of activity, with everything from beach hammocks for relaxing to a variety of water sports for those wanting a thrill. Sargassum is primarily found on beaches along the island’s eastern side. The eastern shoreline acts as a shield, keeping the beaches on the western side seaweed-free.
