Top Ten Tips to Prevent or Control Bed Bugs

how do bed bugs get in your house

The PCO can also identify the underlying cause of the infestation—for example, if they are coming from a neighboring apartment—and treat bedbugs hidden deep in walls or floorboards. A PCO will have specific instructions for cleaning, decluttering, and preparing your home for treatment. The first step in dealing with a suspected or confirmed bedbug infestation is to hire a reputable pest-control operator and carefully follow their instructions. Alongside that, we’ll show you how to find and identify bedbugs. And we’ll tell you how to clean infested bedding, clothing, and furniture, how to keep the bugs from spreading, and, hopefully, how to avoid them in the future.

A few simple precautions can help prevent bed bug infestation in your home:

Alongside any professional treatment, you should clean infested areas and kill any bedbugs you find. Using an upholstery attachment, thoroughly vacuum your mattress and box spring, focusing on seams, crevices, and folds. Vacuum under and around the bed, behind the headboard, and around any other furniture near the bed where bedbugs could harbor. When you’ve finished vacuuming, carefully remove the vacuum bag and immediately seal it in a garbage bag to discard. Bite marks, itchiness, or blood stains on sheets aren’t definitive proof of bedbugs.

Bed bug bites and rashes on household members may indicate an infestation before you spot the bugs themselves.

But different people have different levels of reaction to bed bug bites. If you’re waiting for treatment, you might be able to reduce the number of bed bugs by laying down Cimexa’s Insecticide Dust, which is made mostly of silicon dioxide. This insecticide absorbs the waxy exterior of a bed bug’s shell, leaving it desiccated, but you’ll probably need multiple applications. You can also “bake” bedding, shoes, backpacks, and pillows in a clothes dryer set on high for 10 to 20 minutes. Humans are the preferred host for bed bugs, and they will latch onto skin that is exposed while the host is sleeping.

Step 2: Contain the infestation

Bedbug bites usually clear up without treatment in a week or two. Bedbugs aren't known to spread disease, but they can cause an allergic reaction or a severe skin reaction in some people. Once you’ve vacuumed and cleaned your mattress and box spring, use a bedbug-proof encasement such as the Protect-A-Bed AllerZip Smooth Mattress Encasement. Look for the bugs’ characteristic brown-black, dot-like fecal stains (digested blood) on your bedding, bed frame or nearby baseboards. Examine along the mattress’s seams and crevices, especially the folds of a pillow top. Bedbugs also leave cast skins, which resemble empty bedbug shells or fragments.

What are the typical means through which people contract bed bugs?

What encasement bags are good for is protecting the actual mattress. That means you might not need to toss it and spend money on a new one if you have a bed bug infestation. Substances such as diatomaceous earth, boric acid, and silica gel kill bed bugs by damaging their outer coating so they dry out and die. Put these powders into cracks and crevices around your home (being careful not to ingest or inhale them). When checking in, put your luggage in the bathroom, then inspect the bedding.

So you might want to think twice if there’s a number of boxes tucked under your bed. As we mentioned in the first point, bed bugs will happily latch onto textiles during travel. That means other fabric-based items you bring into your home are unfortunately at risk too, including furniture. Upholstery, such as a fabric couch, can become a hotspot for bed bugs in the right conditions. This is because it provides shelter, as well as a nearby location to where you might rest at night.

If, even after being careful, you discover bed bugs in your home, act quickly. You want to get rid of the bed bugs in the early stages of infestation. The longer they’re in your home, the more difficult it will be to clear them out. Whether you are hiring a pest management professional or trying to eliminate the bugs yourself, properly preparing your home is an essential first step. Taking these steps before starting out will help speed the process and reduce control costs.

Bed bugs can move between rooms in multi-unit buildings like apartments or hotels.

Experts don’t advise throwing out mattresses or furniture if you have bedbugs. If you do decide to discard your mattress (and check with your PCO first), seal it fully in a tear-proof plastic cover (many cities require this). Bedbugs are reddish brown, oval and flat, and about the size of an apple seed. During the day, they hide in the cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames. You can also put your clothes in the dryer on a hot setting for 30 minutes, and try steam cleaning your luggage and clothing.

What are common practices that lead to bed bug infestations?

Since bed bugs usually come out at night to feed, you might consider using some form of bed bug interceptor at the legs of your bed. This would prevent them from reaching you while you sleep thereby interrupting their feeding and reproduction. Their attraction is towards the body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale, not to blood out in the open. Thus, menstrual blood does not increase your risk of attracting bed bugs.

Remember, acting swiftly is key to preventing a full-blown infestation. Bedbugs love people and they tend to gather where lots of people live. Our experts continually monitor the health and wellness space, and we update our articles when new information becomes available.

In some instances, bed bugs can come from inside electrical switch plates, picture frames, and wallpaper. These elusive pests can be found nearly anywhere inside a home, car, bus, or other shelter. In hotels, the most common place to find bed bugs is within the backside of headboards that are mounted on walls. Additionally, never bring second-hand furniture, especially mattresses and box springs, into a home without thoroughly examining for signs of bed bugs.

Look for live bugs and signs of them such as small blood stains, bed bug excrement, and eggshells on your sheets or mattress. They can easily latch themselves to luggage, clothing, and even used furniture to reach your home. If you unknowingly slept in an infested place or brought infested stuff into your home, there’s a high chance that you might end up with bed bugs in your bed.

Step 1: Identify all infested areas

On the "Consumer 101" TV show, Consumer Reports' expert Haniya Rae explains how you can protect yourself against a bed bug infestation. Enclosing your mattress, pillows, and box spring with a protective cover can block bed bugs from reaching their favorite hiding place. It is important to understand what a bed bug looks like and know how to identify the tell-tale signs of bed bugs whenever spending time in a populated area. They respond to the smell of a sleeping host’s breath and are lured by the warmth and carbon dioxide exhaled in the air. Also, research shows that these bugs are not attracted to dirty environments per se, but are drawn more to the scent of humans, irrespective of hygiene status. Bed bugs are found across the globe from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe.

Don’t Let the Bedbugs, Mosquitoes, Ticks, or Ants Bite

That means if your unworn clothes come into contact with any materials or surfaces which carry bed bugs, these pests have a chance to transfer over. And with bed bugs moving at up to four feet a minute, this won’t take long. Heating infested furniture or the entire apartment to a very high temperature—more than 100 degrees, in most cases—will kill bed bugs. Perhaps the most alarming feature of bed bugs is their fast-reproductive nature. Females lay 1-5 eggs per day, reaching up to 541 eggs in their lifetime. It only takes about 21 days for these nymphs to become adult bed bugs.

They feed on our blood by piercing through our skin with tiny, saw-like mouthparts. They also numb the area with saliva full of anesthetic and anti-clotting chemicals to reduce pain while sucking the blood out. Bees and insects crisscross my yard searching for a sip of nectar, ferrying pollen between the golden poppies and California lilacs and bumbling across flower petals. Bedbugs’ small and narrow bodies enable them to squeeze into tiny spots, like the seams of a mattress or couch and the folds of curtains.

However, some humans never have a reaction to bites, making a bed bug infestation hard to identify. After times of extended exposure, it is possible for humans to reach a point where they no longer have a reaction or their reaction may become more severe. Adult bed bugs are visible to the human eye and can be detected by sight, especially within mattress seams and box springs. Bed bug nymphs can be harder to identify, as they are smaller in size and paler in color. Unlike many pests, bed bugs are not attracted to scraps of food. They are obligate hematophagous, meaning their diet solely comprises of blood – preferably human.

The first step in dealing with a bedbug infestation is to hire a reputable pest-control operator. Bed bugs are attracted to warmth, blood and carbon dioxide, not dirt. Bed bugs feed on mammals and birds and can leave a bite that resembles a typical insect bite, a rash or hives.

Step 5: Evaluate and prevent future bedbugs

If you’re not sure what type of bug you’ve found, bring it to an exterminator or entomologist to identify. Pet and wild bird food can cause rodent infestations at the points of food storage, and feeding. Mice and rats will easily sniff out poorly stored food, spilled food, and uneaten food left in food bowls.

However, low-level infestations are also much more challenging to find and correctly identify. Other insects, such as carpet beetles, can be easily mistaken for bed bugs. If you misidentify a bed bug infestation, it gives the bugs more time to spread to other areas of the house or hitchhike a ride to someone else's house to start a new infestation.

Animals are attracted to the warmth and protection that our houses provide. Possible entry points include holes or missing boards on the fascia or soffit, gaps between the fascia and eaves, gable or ridge vents without screens, and missing shingles. The best way to keep animals outside is to inspect these areas annually, and keep your roof in good repair. To keep your basement dry, check the grading and downspouts around your house to make sure that rainwater is draining away from, not toward, the foundation. Be sure to address other potential sources of leaks—including windows and sump pumps—as problems arise.

You may have to try a few different treatment methods to control the infestation. And if they still do not go away, you’ll want to call in a professional exterminator. To make surviving bedbugs easier to spot, place bedbug interceptors under each leg of the bed. These devices will trap bedbugs before they can climb up into your bed. You may need to keep checking the interceptors for a full year. Before you can ensure that your treatment has worked, you need proof that the bugs have moved on.

Although the bite is painless at the time of the attack, most people develop an allergic reaction to the saliva that is transmitted during the bite. This can be an indication that the bites are from bed bugs and not a different pest. Bed bugs are common in places with high turnover rates, such as hotels or hostels. If you stay in these places and do not inspect or take precautions with your luggage, it’s easy to inadvertently take some bugs home with you.

Bed bugs are most easily identified by small reddish-brown fecal spots on mattresses, upholstery or walls. Bites on the arms and legs are also a tell-tale sign of bed bugs. While these bites can be small, if they swell and become itchy, they are noticeable. It can take two to three days for these bites to appear, allowing the infestation to grow. However, bites alone do not indicate an infestation without other bed bug evidence. Although bed bugs can dine on many warm-blooded animals, they primarily feed on humans.

Keep papers organized, clean and dust regularly, and purge unused stuff. Inspect and seal these holes with silicone caulk to eliminate entry points for pests. Your attic is a great place to raise a family—just ask your neighborhood squirrels, bats, and mice.

“Mattress encasements can be useful to save your mattress and box spring, but they won’t solve your bed bug problem,” DeVries says. Two insecticides commonly used to kill bed bugs are becoming less effective against them, according to a study published today in the Journal of Economic Entomology. Identifying bed bugs is essential to ensure you avoid carrying them with you.

You may have to try a few different chemical and nonchemical approaches, especially if you have a large infestation. Mice, squirrels, raccoons, birds and other critters can easily enter the home through a chimney, so be sure to close the damper when it’s not in use. Install a mesh-covered chimney cap, and inspect it each spring and fall to make sure it’s in place and intact. Dogs and cats may be protected against fleas and ticks with preventative medication or collars, but that doesn’t mean they won’t bring bugs into the house.

house cuddy

With everything on the line, Cuddy forges a prescription record and perjures herself to make it appear that House stole nothing but a placebo. Shortly after becoming Dean of Medicine, Cuddy was approached by House once again. He had recently been fired from yet another job - the fourth time. Her official explanation is that House "came cheap" (i.e. she didn't have to pay him much). However, there has been a great deal of speculation as to why she did hire him. She has also carefully avoided questions about why she hasn't fired him, except to constantly describe House as "the best doctor we've got".

Early life

She confronted House about his Vicodin use and broke up with him. Once again, Cuddy risks her career by playing chicken with the hospital's largest insurance company Atlantic Net. When they offer her a 4 percent across-the-board increase for procedures, she demands 12 percent and threatens to cut off their contract. They come back with 8 percent, but she still holds out and, when the deadline passes, she announces the contract is over. With no response, she is willing to admit defeat and go to the board to resign when the insurance company rep comes back with a new contract agreeing to the full increase.

Lisa Cuddy

She was the Dean of Medicine and Chief Hospital Administrator of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital from Season 1 to Season 7. She's a specialist in endocrinology, but when she was in charge at PPTH, her administrative duties took precedence over her role as a medical practitioner. Lucas Douglas, who likes Cuddy himself, certainly thinks House is romantically interested in Cuddy, as he saw no other reason for House's attempt to get Cuddy to reveal something about herself to Lucas.

The Series

When the mother dies and the father and grandparents don't want the child, Cuddy becomes a foster parent for her and names her Rachel. Although she finds it difficult to become attached to the child, it finally happens and she decides to adopt her. At the end of the episode Top Secret, there were additional but non-explicit clues. House remembers where he had seen the patient before - making out with Cuddy at a hospital fundraiser. Cuddy says the only reason why House had remembered him (he never remembers anyone) is because he was making out with Cuddy. She intimates House wanted her himself (she made the same observation in Insensitive).

She also comes from a long line of physicians - her great grandfather published a key medical text. We also know that she has also wanted to be a doctor ever since she was 12 years old. She often felt her mother treated her more harshly than her younger sister, but later came to believe that her mother only pushed her knowing that she was capable of great things. The only other salient fact about her early life is that she admitted to Wilson (who later told House) that she once slept with her father's best friend. Their history together is not as clear, but here is what is known for sure.

After a tumultuous stab at a mature relationship in Season 7, Cuddy dumps House after a cancer scare which House cannot bring himself to confront without the aid of his old friend Vicodin. Cuddy realizes that House is not and probably never will be ready for a real relationship and ends it. Based on Cuddy's assertion that she wants House arrested if he ever comes near her again after this incident, it may be safely assumed that the final nail has been driven into the lid of the Huddy coffin.

Actress

In the episode Moving On, House drove his car into Cuddy's house, permenantly ending their relationship. After this episode, there was no reference to Cuddy having contact with House for the remainder of the series. In Season 6, Epic Fail, Cuddy seemed surprised and a bit saddened when House came back to tell her he was quitting.

Characterization

Cameron suggests to House that instead they propose an across- the-board salary cut that will save exactly the same amount of money. When House proposes this, Vogler rejects the suggestion outright, and Cuddy soon realizes that Vogler isn't trying to save money, he's trying to get House in line. House tries to mollify Vogler by offering up Robert Chase, but unbeknownst to anyone, Chase is Vogler's only "rat" in House's department as Cameron and Foreman turn him down flat. It's mentioned in many parts of the show that she wants a child. Although not in a relationship at the time, she attempts IVF with three unsuccessful implantations, one ending in miscarriage.

Cuddy once again offers him a good job if he comes back, but Foreman turns her down flat. However, when Foreman finds out he's unemployable, he agrees to Cuddy's conditions, but she withdraws her offer and instead insists Foreman return at his old salary and stay on House's team to keep an eye on him. Behind House's back, Cuddy hired Cameron to be the senior attending physician in the emergency room. She also learns that Chase wants to be close to Cameron, despite the fact he has other options available.

Throughout Season 6, Cuddy is busy with her adopted daughter and is in a relationship with a private investigator, Lucas, who was hired by House to spy on Wilson at the start of Season 5. She cared for House after he goes through rehab for Vicodin. After sensing romantic feelings from House, Cuddy tells House that she would like to be friends; but he refuses, quoting that is the "last thing he wants".

In the Season 6 finale "Help Me", House gives Cuddy an antique medical text written by her great-grandfather, which prompts her to confess that she and Lucas were engaged. Cuddy, House and House's team go to Trenton to help victims where a crane collapsed on a building. House finds a woman named Hanna who is trapped under a mountain of rubble. The first responders and Cuddy both tell House that Hanna's leg needs to be amputated for a chance of survival. Cuddy claims that the reason why he is refusing is because he is bitter over her engagement and what he went through with his leg years ago.

House constantly bombards Cuddy with sexually suggestive comments, often remarking about the display of her breasts or the size of her buttocks. She has always seemed to enjoy this and even encouraged it during the poker game in All In. Once House started taking an interest in Cuddy's relationships, Cuddy began to believe that House was actually attracted to her. However, her reaction appeared to be that House had an earlier opportunity to have a relationship with Cuddy and did not do so. The relationship between Cuddy and House is a strained one.

Actress

Later on, she visited House in his apartment while he was cooking with a Chinese woman. Later, in The Tyrant, House came back to the hospital when he learned that the pain in his leg goes away when he works on a medical case. Cuddy allowed House to come back, but not to his old position right away since his medical license would take a few weeks to be reinstated. Even though Foreman asked Cuddy to not let House come back, she decided to keep House anyway. However, her loyalty has often come at a very high price, such as insisting House do more clinic duty, or provide more guidance to students.

Character Played By

This time, romance blossoms as Lucas soon bonds with her and Rachel. After House recovers, but says he doesn't want to practice medicine anymore, Cuddy reluctantly allows Foreman to take over the department. However, Thirteen and Taub soon leave, and Cuddy allows Foreman to team up again with Chase and Cameron until he can hire new fellows. Cuddy has an admirer in Season 5, House's new private detective Lucas Douglas, who tries to slip his invoices past as medical expenses when House won't pay them. Although Cuddy is flattered, she hardly sees Lucas as an ideal match.

Therefore, she has been House's boss for at least 13 years, indicating that she was 38 when the show started and is currently 45. When Cuddy snapped at House after he reversed course and said she would have made a great mom, he suddenly kissed her. In Bombshells, Cuddy faced the possibility that she may have terminal cancer. During the episode, she experienced a series of dream sequences which suggested that she believed House to be an unreliable partner. When House did eventually show up, Cuddy later realised he must have taken Vicodin to be with her.

Wilson tests a spoon with Cuddy's saliva and finds no cancer markers.

Early life

When House asks for suggestions, she tries to manipulate him by suggesting Chris Taub and Kutner, thinking he will reject them because she suggested them. Seeing that House has an all-male team, she allows him to hire Thirteen as well, then realizes House manipulated her into allowing him to hire all three. However, she's not pleased with the solution - a reality show style competition.

Lisa Cuddy

Throughout season 6, House has attempted to prove to Cuddy that he is changed and capable of a serious relationship. Fast forward to about five years before the series starts. House is known as the one of the greatest diagnosticians in the world, but is practically unemployable due to his inability to deal with anyone—supervisors, subordinates, staff or patients. Cuddy, on the other hand, has become the second youngest chief of medicine in the history of Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. For some reason even Cuddy has kept hidden, possibly in a legal manoeuver to keep PPTH for being sued for malpractice over the way they ignored House's wishes and crippled him, she decides to hire House. Following the break-up, House engaged in a series of provocative behaviour designed to make Cuddy jealous, including marrying Dominika Petrova in the hospital.

The three-way dynamics get worse when Arlene nearly dies of heavy metal poisoning that Cuddy had early tossed off as hypochondria compounded by House's combination of medical genius and bad bedside manner. Despite some early bumps, such as setting boundaries at work and House's ongoing non-sexual relationship with his former hookers, the relationship grows well. They settle into a regular pattern of sexual encounters interspersed with dating and even spending quiet times together evenings and weekends. After House's entire team quits and he refuses to hire anyone else (or do any actual work), Cuddy challenges him to treat a patient within 24 hours. House thinks he's succeeded, but when the patient keeps getting worse, it takes him a few days to find out what's wrong.

However, it is still possible that they reconcile post series. House replies, "I always want to kiss you," and the two share a quick kiss. After a second, they begin kissing passionately as the episode comes to a close. (Technically she can't, House has tenure and can only be fired by the board acting unanimously, but they despise House more than anyone.) However, when pressed, Cuddy will point out that House has saved about one patient a week. She also realizes that House is a much better doctor than she is.

Despite the fact that House is stuck to outperform his team and all talk of having Foreman take over permanently is shelved. Vogler holds out a poisoned olive branch - if House will endorse his new drug, he will let House keep his department intact. House goes back on the deal - House goes to a major conference and embarrasses Vogler by damning the drug with faint praise and pointing out its costs outweigh its benefits.

House manages to keep it within budget by cutting base salaries, but Cuddy gets angry when a patient dies during the "second round". After insulting and assaulting a patient (with a rectal thermometer) in the clinic, Cuddy insists House apologize. When House refuses, the situation escalates when the patient turns out to be a police detective. He follows House and finds him with Vicodin on his person and arrests him for drug possession. A little digging finds a few hundred spare Vicodin in House's apartment, and some prescriptions that look forged. House soon finds himself being charged with trafficking and fraud.

Cuddy quit her job after the events of season seven's finale "Moving On". In the episode Known Unknowns, while attending a medical conference, House admits to Cuddy that he had feelings for her when he first saw her at the Michigan University library, catching her off guard. The next day, he went up to her hotel room to ask if he could help with her baby, only to find out that Lucas was in the room with the baby. Cuddy and Lucas tell House they started going out right after House was admitted to Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital. Later, in the episode Ignorance is Bliss, House tries to break up Cuddy and Lucas. Cuddy invites House to her home for Thanksgiving dinner, but gave him the wrong address to stop him from ruining the evening.

Heartbroken and angry, she lashes out at House, but they embrace and kiss. Cuddy scores a major coup for the hospital when she lands a major donor for the hospital, Edward Vogler, who pledges $100,000,000 on the condition he be made chairman of the Board of Directors. Cuddy is more than happy to oblige, but it soon turns out this will not be a picnic. Cuddy scrambles to save House and Vogler finally agrees to give him a chance - fire one of his fellows to save money.

In the Instagram video, Perry spoke over a screenshot of a death hoax article that read, "American actress Cassie [sic] Davis died of lung cancer at the age of 58."

Cassie Davis, best known for her portrayal of Ella Payne on Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and its spinoff series The Paynes, died on February 4, 2023, according to social media reactions. This might also have been the case with the death hoax for Davis. Perry said Davis told him this was at least the third or fourth time a death hoax had used her name. She also joked that she figured she's "died more times than a cat." House of Payne revolves around the Payne family who resides in the suburban Atlanta. It is noted that all main cast members are credited only for the episodes in which they appear.

Even though in the episode "Weeping May Endure for a Night", the Paynes claim to have attended the funeral of Brown's father, in Meet the Browns, they are nowhere to be seen. This may be because Lance Gross, who plays Calvin Payne in the series, plays a character named Michael in the film and LaVan Davis, who plays Curtis Payne, plays a bus driver. Curtis claimed Brown made them wait in the cemetery for two hours while he gave his father a tour of Atlanta (his last request), but in the movie, Brown stayed the entire time. The episodes serve as a backdoor pilot to Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, a spin-off of the film and play as well as House of Payne.

"I figure the Lord still loves me and my husband has not skipped a beat and missed a beat." "And you can see that I have Bell's palsy," she told the interviewer, Jessica Garrett Modkins. "I don't know what it is but I figure when it is time for the Lord to straighten it out, he will." Ella loves her family and unlike Curtis, always tries to be nice towards them. She often urges Curtis to be nice to the rest of the family as well. Ella is especially nice to her son Calvin and her nephew C.

The pair first connected in the third grade, but the 54-year-old claims she had been in love with her man since sixth grade. (laughing) She went on to say that when she really dies nobody's going to believe it. She'll be like the boy who cried wolf, and the wolf ate her obituary. She said, "Yes, Tyler. This is the third or fourth time this has happened, and people just need to stop doing this." Further, we found no information that she had ever been diagnosed with lung cancer. Ella finds Lisa's stripper flyer and is very upset with CJ, she consults CJ, who is forced to put Ella in place, mainly how he runs his household.

When CJ tries to discipline Malik Curtis has had enough of CJ not discipline Jazmine and Malik hard enough, and decides to teach Malik a hard lesson. Curtis decides to press charges against Malik and Kyle, and a furious Ella kicks Curtis out of the house. When Curtis returns after Calvin and guys at work beg him to go home, Ella decides to let him come home but kicks him out of their bedroom, and makes him sleep on the couch. Cassi Davis portrays Ella Payne, the matriarch of the Payne family in ‘House of Payne.’ The actress is a principal cast member of the show, which first released in 2007. For her role as Ella, Davis won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010 and 2013 and also earned nominations for the same in 2009 and 2011. There is no doubt that Davis is a fan favorite, which goes on to explain why people were quick to raise concerns over her health as the tenth season premiered on May 25, 2021, on BET.

We believe that every person's story is important as it provides our community with an opportunity to feel a sense of belonging, share their hopes and dreams. Davis and her co-star LaVan Davis have been fighting rumors about their relationship for years, and she recently set the record straight. Ever since she was diagnosed with the disease in March 2020, even though the couple does not have children, their love for one another is admirable. She dropped out of college after only one credit because she was forbidden from performing religious music at her senior recital. Cassi was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, on July 31, 1964, and attended Spelman College in Atlanta to study music. However, there is an obituary for Cassie Lynn Davis, who died from metastatic breast cancer on September 17, 2022, at the age of 32.

While you may prefer one de-wrinkling method over another, there are particular instances where steaming or ironing is recommended. Really dirty items — whether stained, sweaty or extremely smelly — should always be washed separately from lightly soiled ones.

Because eighteenth and nineteenth century houses generated lots of laundry, laundry facilities that included Wash-houses and Laundry-related rooms were an important part of any home. Sometimes laundry facilities were completely separate from a house and located near the Stables, but it was a chore to move the entire laundry of household to an area far from the house. One reason laundry facilities might be located next to the Stables was because it was difficult to attach Drying or Bleaching grounds near a house. Part of the decision about laundry locations was often based on the number of inferior servants tasked with accomplishing the chore. Additionally, if the mistress of the house or the head laundress wanted to supervise laundry operations more closely, and if drying outdoors was dispensed with, indoor drying might be used it.

Before moving on to the next step, give the care and fiber labels another glance to make sure that everything in your laundry pile calls for the same water temperatures and drying times. Pull out any delicates that could be damaged by coarser fibers as well as items that should be hand-washed. Heavier, coarser fibers take longer to dry, so removing them will also prevent you from over-drying more delicate fibers.

This Is How Much Laundry Detergent You Should Actually Use — And Yes, It's Shocking

When deciding which is best, consider the durability and soil level of your items. In general, the more durable (towels, sheets and heavy cottons) and dirty the items, the longer and hotter the cycle should be. If you're working with delicate, stained or bulky items, keep the following cycle descriptions in mind (but know that they may differ for your washing machine). Every now and again, you might not have labels to turn to, like if you cut it off prematurely or the writing has been worn away from repeated wear. If you don't have a label to use as your guide, start with the most delicate washing and drying method to ensure that you don't ruin your garments. But if you feel it's safe to take things one step further, follow these guidelines that align with the specific fiber that you're working with.

The Magic House Family Gala

Kids can learn to launch everything from rockets to small businesses in The Magic House @ MADE, which opened to the public today. The Magic House’s first permanent satellite location, at 5127 Delmar, isn’t a museum. Rather, it’s an interactive space where kids can get hands-on experience working with low-tech looms, high-tech laser cutters, and much more. Everyone from grandparents on down can have fun at The Magic House, but the exhibits are mostly designed for younger children. The “For Baby & Me” area features a peek-a-boo barn, baby gym, and miniature school bus.

Foster families receive free admission with proof of a current foster home license. The design lab includes an architecture area stocked with supplies from 3DuxDesign, a company founded by siblings Ayana and Ethan Klein, two of the featured speakers at a preview party celebrating the space Thursday. 3Dux building sets consist of cardboard shapes and simple connectors that allow kids the flexibility to build and embellish an endless variety of structures. It takes more than one day to fully explore and enjoy the scholastic treasures found on every floor of the Magic House. Exhibitions such as the Bubble Room and the Lewis and Clark Adventure are designed to educate and entertain people of all ages. The pin point wall allows curious onlookers to create 3D impressions of themselves, and the Jack and the Beanstalk area gives kids the opportunity to climb a three-story beanstalk just like the hero from the classic children’s tale.

I know of a couple ways to get in the Magic House for free, and couple more places where you can find coupons. The good news/bad news is that temporary safety regulations have limited their visitor capacity to 150 people per session. This means tickets could go super fast, but also that there will be no crowds. They’ve made a lot of improvements to the house while waiting to reopen, including touchless faucets and toe kicks for bathroom doors. Exhibits have been spaced out, while some that are too difficult to make germ safe have been closed. The Family Plus Membership will also get you 50% off admission at 200+ museums in other states!

Special Events & Programs

The design lab offers tools to create stop-motion videos and features a video game design station created by St. Louis–based game developer Pixel Press. Kids can also draw up 3-D prototypes of gears and gadgets using Tinkercad, a computer-based design tool, and print out their creations on a 3-D printer. You don’t have to be a kid to appreciate all the wonder and knowledge that is packed inside the walls of St. Louis’ Magic House. Regular admission for The Magic House @ MADE  is $5 for visitors 1 and older. Family Memberships, offering unlimited admission to The Magic House @ MADE, are available beginning at $50 a year. Active-duty U.S. military and their immediate family members (military ID holder and five immediate family members) receive free admission.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Monster of the Month w/ Colin Dickey: The "Mutes"

The recycling/upcycling craft area offers fun tools from scissors and needle/thread to hot glue guns. This exhibit transports kids back to the time of dinosaurs and encourages basic scientific learning. Oldham is a freelance writer and Teach For America alumna who has taught middle school, high school, college, and adult education classes in the St. Louis area. In the entrepreneurs’ marketplace, they can design buttons and business cards to market their ideas and inventions. And the Magic House @ MADE even features some real-world examples of products created by kids who’ve done just that. The MADE acronym defines the facility’s four sections, a Makers’ Space, Artists’ Studio, Designers’ Lab, and Entrepreneurs’ Marketplace, with each area offering several activities and design challenges to spark kids’ creativity.

We have several levels to choose from to fit your families needs, view our annual pass options here. The Magic House is one of the top Children’s Museum’s in the country, inspiring children to discover the world through play as they explore hundreds of exciting interactive exhibits. Residents of St. Louis County, City of St. Louis, Jefferson County, Franklin County, St. Charles County, Warren County and Lincoln County can enjoy $3 admission per person from 3 p.m. To receive the discount, guests need to provide proof of residency. The interactive space is the Kirkwood children museum’s first satellite location. The Magic House, as well as MADE for Kids, also has Free Family Nights the 3rd Friday of every month from 5-8 pm!

Founded in 1979, this interactive children’s museum provides fun hands-on learning activities that encourage creativity. The museum staff loves to help children understand science, history, and the world around them through exhibits that involve them in the action. Family Plus ($250) is a great option for parents and kids from a single household who want to get into both museums. Among other tools, the art area features potter’s wheels, a screen printer, and a colorful display of markers and other supplies that’s a work of art on its own. The makers’ space, sponsored by the Ameren Corporation Charitable Trust, showcases sewing machines, a laser cutter, and an area where visitors can apply basic coding skills by using special markers to design a path for a tiny Ozobot robot. The Ozobot can change speed, direction, or even spin or zigzag according to the color codes in its path.

In 1997, the Museum underwent a major expansion which added the Children's Village, Math Path, Fitness Center and an Education Wing. In 2001, The Magic House opened Backyard Magic, an outdoor facility featuring a Victorian Education Pavilion, a Children's Sculpture Garden and an outdoor Exhibit Patio. Again in 2008, The Magic House underwent a major expansion as it added a 25,000-square-foot addition nearly doubling the size of the Museum.[5] In 2005, "A Little Bit of Magic" was transformed into the hands on STEM exhibit, WonderWorks. In 2019, to further extend the reach of The Magic House in the community, we opened MADE for Kids, a new satellite location created for children ages 4-14 on the north side of Delmar Boulevard in the City of St. Louis. Since it opened, MADE for Kids has served over 60,000 visitors and developed important community partnerships in the region and implemented a workforce development initiative for neighborhood youth.

A Beginner's Guide to Earthbag Homes Construction

earthbag house

Burlap isn't as durable as polypropylene, but it is a more natural material. Generally, the weaker the fill material, the stronger the bag should be. It's also possible to use long sandbag tubing, such as the superadobe tubes developed by Nader Khalili.

How Do You Build an Earthbag Home?

The buttresses create mass in between the windows and doors. The wood for the lintels came from a Reused building material warehouse. Assuming you have the building site cleared and leveled, the first step in earthbag construction is to dig a trench where the foundation will be placed.

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials

Rubble trench foundations, meaning a trench filled with rocks, gravel or broken concrete, are commonly used with earthbag homes. The first layer of bags can either be placed at ground level or slightly below ground level, in the trench. Adobe is also a mixture of dirt and clay, but it's a more liquid mix that is formed into bricks and cured in the sun.

How thick are earthbag walls?

Earthbag homes are usually built with the polypropylene bags commonly used as sandbags during floods. These types of bags are also widely used for feed sacks and can be sourced from recycled sources. The California Institute of Earth Architecture recommends bags specially manufactured as long tubes, which can be cut to the specific length of your wall. The Institute offers affordable SuperAdobe bags that are sold by the roll.

The ease and simplicity of building with earthbags should also be mentioned, since there is much unskilled labor available around the world that can be tapped for using this technology. One person familiar with the basics of earthbag building can easily train others to assist in the erection of a building. This not only makes the process more affordable, but also more feasible in remote areas where many common building skills are not to be found. Contained sand (CS) uses sand fill or any fill too dry or with poor cohesion that performs structurally like sandbags. Some builders use narrow bags of contained sand as wall infill.

How We Built Our Earthship, an Off-grid Prairie Home

This figure does not include filling the bags, which can take a tremendous amount of time. This tutorial covers the basics of how to build an earthbag house. You will want to explore many more ideas and principles before diving into an earthbag construction.

The wood material has been obtaining from the trees of seven years old beechwood (Gmelina Arborea) planted in the garde... Earthbags have the tremendous advantage of providing either thermal mass or insulation, depending on what the bags are filled with. When filled with soil they provide thermal mass, but when filled with lighter weight materials, such as crushed volcanic stone, perlite, vermiculite, or rice hulls, they provide insulation. The bags can even act as natural non-wicking, somewhat insulated foundations when they are filled with gravel. At this point you can finish your electrical and install plumbing fixtures. You can also install doors, trim, shelving and cabinets, and then stain and varnish any woodwork, and paint your home.

Geiger's Guides to Building

Add two strands of 4-point barbed wire between each course. Add courses of gravel-filled bags until you’re at least 6” above the risk of moisture damage. For those who don’t know, earthbag building uses polypropylene rice bags or feed bags filled with soil or insulation that are stacked like masonry and tamped flat. Non-profit organizations are building schools, orphanages, emergency shelters and other structures.

So if you’d like an all-natural option to building a home, then consider this tutorial on how they built their gorgeous home. This blog details how this man and his wife built their perfect earthbag home. So I think that reason alone has hooked a lot of people to this idea.

Windows and doors can be formed with a traditional masonry lintel or with corbeling or brick-arch techniques, on temporary forms. Light may also be brought in by skylights, glass-capped pipes, or bottles placed between bag courses during construction. The structure is typically finished with plaster, either cement stucco on a strong mesh layer or an adobe or lime plaster, to shed water and prevent fabric UV damage. Finishes can differ from protected interior applications to exposed external applications.

The reliance on local, raw building materials drastically reduces both the embodied energy and the carbon footprint of the building process. The plastic in the polypropylene bags, the cement aggregate, and the steel barbed wire usually account for no more than five percent of the total building material. Khalili, who established the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture in Hesperia, Calif., identified sand as a resource that was available to everyone.

This is one of the strongest structures I’ve ever worked on in my 30-plus year construction career. The main impression is one of incredible fortresslike strength – massive walls with no sway. It is possible to build with earthbags in places that do have building codes, but it is often necessary to have a state-licensed architect or engineer sign off on the plans, and that can cost money and time. This research is based on the analytical study of a sustainable house that exists on the ground, which is the Earthbag house of engineer Hanna Al-Khalili in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

Cover the wall to prevent damage to the bags from UV rays or moisture with cement-based stucco, or lime or earthen plaster. If walls are 'raw' earth, an infill plaster of earth with straw is used to fill the nooks between bags or courses. Thermal insulating properties are important for climates that experience temperature extremes. The thermal insulating value of a material is directly related to both the porosity of the material and the thickness of the wall. Crushed volcanic rock, pumice or rice hulls yield higher insulation value than clay or sand.

The thick walls make this process time-consuming and cumbersome. It requires professionals for safe electrical wiring and plumbing connections. Therefore, you should only go the DIY route if you have sufficient time and energy for the work. Otherwise, consider hiring professionals, which will add to the overall cost. These materials absorb heat during the day to keep the indoors cool, and release the absorbed heat at night to warm the internal space.
